B Walk
Armathwaite and Ainstable
8 Miles Grade 3
Leader: Graham Bell
B walk 1st February 2015 leader Graham Bell Armathwaite circular 8 miles Grade 3 Guess what, there's a 95% chance that once again the "B"walk will be very muddy. On the other hand to look on the bright side there's a 5% chance it won't be !!!
From the bridge the walk follows the eastern bank of the Eden as far as Catlands Cottage. We continue northwards as far as Thwaites before turning South towards Ainstable. From there it's onward to Bascodyke and Longdales. The final mile to Armathwaite is through Coombe Woods.
Thanks to Roger's efforts coffee, tea, scones and toasted tea cakes will be available at the Fox and Pheasant in Armathwaite.

Wednesday 28th January
Brampton - Talkin Tarn
6 Miles Grade 4
Leader: David Hall
Starting at The Sands (Telephone Box) opposite the Alms Houses, we
cross to Tree Road then to Capon Tree Road where we cross the main
by-pass. We then follow the lane to join up with Station Lane where
leave it to cross the fields to Talkin Tarn. We leave the Tarn to make
our way towards to Farlam Village to eventually come back to
Brampton Station. From here we take the old dandy railway line back to
Brampton.
I know there will be quite a bit of road walking, but perhaps in view of
the recent weather, we should avoid a lot of MUD.
David.

We will basically follow the course of the River Eden as it winds south along the Eden Valley sometimes passing within a few feet of the river and sometimes rising high above it. There is plenty to see along the river including Great Corby village, Wetheral viaduct and woods, Corby Castle, St Constantines Cells and the wildlife associated with the river. Of the riverbank at Corby Castle and Wetheral, Thomas de Quincey wrote, “there, art and nature seem to have done their utmost to produce a scene of utmost beauty”. Be aware that at this time of year he might well have added the words “and mud”. Most of the route is easy firm walking but there will be one or two short sections where the route is muddy. No need for wetsuits but gaiters might be helpful.
Afterwards at Armathwaite, the “Fox and Pheasant” (over the bridge) have been very obliging to agree to offer us tea and coffee. They are not set up to do cakes but teacakes and some scones should be available. Unfortunately they (unusually) have two other parties for a late Sunday lunch and they are not sure when these others will be leaving. However there will be some tables in the bar but there is the possibility that some of us may have to stand. The later we arrive the more likely that tables will be available.

C Walk
Armathwaite Area
7 Miles Grade 3
Leader: David Hall
Starting at the end of the Eden Bridge just before the Fox & Pheasant
Inn we take a popular path alongside the River Eden through Coombs Wood.
On reaching a minor road, after a short distance we pass Longdales farm
to take field paths to Ruckcroft. From here we walk along a minor
road to Ainstable, and then down through fields to join the river path back to
Armathwaite .
