A Walk

Fellside - Great Sca Fell - Knott - High Pike - Caldbeck

10.75 Miles Grade 2SC

Leader: Ian Rowley

It is unlikely that the walk will be Melbreak due to the terrible weather forecast for Wednesday.

Judith will be at the Sands and will have an alternative walk if anyone wants to go

We will park at the Kirkstile Inn car park. Melbreak looks quite daunting from the base, but the views from the top are well worth it. The ascent is steep but we will have plenty of stops. After a little effort going up the scree a easier path emerges. There are two tops, the North first, then along a grassy ridge to the South top.

Mellbreak is itself a ridge like the keel of a overturned boat( collapsed in the middle), it has no links with other fells. The views are really lovely looking toward Crummock Water and Buttermere and also toward the Solway Coast. We just hope for nice weather.  We will descend down a grassy path to Scale force and then along the side of Crummock  Water and back to the Kirkstile  Inn for tea and scones.

B Walk

High Pike

8 Miles Grade 2

Leader: Geoff Entwistle

X

X

An easy paced ascent of High Pike from Caldbeck and descent by a different route. Field paths and minor roads take us to Hudscales Farm, from where we go on old mine tracks to Birket mine. An ascending footpath east of Old Fell takes us to the open fellside and the summit of High Pike, the probable lunch stop. The descent, initially on open ground and then on old mine tracks, is via Potts Gill mine and Nether Row, and then on minor roads and field paths back to Caldbeck and refreshments.

A mixture of old tracks, footpaths, open ground and minor roads, one short boggy stretch

8 miles (13 km), 1500 feet (450 m) of ascent

Fellside – Great Sca Fell-Knott-High Pike-Caldbeck

10.75  Miles Grade 2 SC

This walk starts from Fellside above Caldbeck but I think the nearest the coach will get us is aprox. a mile from the start point. This has been factored into the overall distance of the walk.

From Fellside we’ll take the rough mine road up the valley of Dale Beck before climbing steeply up Roughton Gill alongside a series of impressive waterfalls that are mostly hidden from the valley floor. There is a tough ascent up the heathery slopes of Balliway Rig that is largely trackless but provides a direct route to the summit of Great Sca Fell at 2130 ft.

After this fairly strenuous ascent the rest of the walk should be relatively straightforward for an A walk though it is likely to be very wet underfoot.

After climbing over Knott we’ll descend towards the lonely bothy on Great Lingy Hill, splendidly perched above Mosedale with views towards Blencathra. This will probably be a good spot for lunch.

From here we’ll be following the Cumbrian Way on a track that becomes drier as we ascend the third Wainwright of the day High Pike another fine view point. From here it’s an easy descent towards Potts Gill mine then down into Caldbeck village.

C Walk

Potts Gill

6 Miles Grade 4

Leader: Pat Goulding & Joe Birney

Parkend  -  Potts Gill. -  Caldbeck

On a fine dry day this is a lovely walk along the fell bottom, visiting along the way, Fellside, Potts Gill, Nether Row, Matthew Rudding, arriving at Caldbeck via the Howk.

The walk contains some road walking & in places will be wet underfoot.

Pat and I are doing the walk on Gill's behalf & we haven't walked it out, so a surprise may be in store, but we will be never more than a couple of miles from Caldbeck.
