Castle Crag - Cat Bells - Dalton Caves - Portinscale

The coach will drop us off at the bridge at Grange in Borrowdale. We will walk through Grange village past hollows farm campsite and up onto Castle crag.

Usually, a crowd of other walkers gather and there is a small ceremony with two minutes silence at the 11th hour.

Castle crag is the lowest wainwright at 290m, but it is still steep in places and has some loose slate paths. We will come down from castle crag after the ceremony and head around the east side, on a woodland walk towards Millican Dalton caves. The caves are up a steep rocky path off the side of the main route. If it is too wet and slippery we can give this diversion a miss, some caves can be seen from the main path.

We will then head for manesty and uphill through hausegate towards the summit of catbells at 451m.

Hopefully we will have a beautiful autumn 🍂 day and good views. We could have our lunch here.

A gentle scramble takes us down catbells and once back down in valley, it's a mostly flat walk on woodland/ parkland paths to Portinscale.

We may have time for a quick drink in the cafe before meeting the coach to take our weary legs home.
