Waverly Viaduct
New Planning Application
Any comments you registered with the council regarding the
original application are no longer valid
We need you to register your support again
The Carlisle and District Rambling Club
will be writing to the Council
to support the application
but we need as many people as possible to register their support individualy.
The viaduct carried the Waverley line from Carlisle to Edinburgh which was closed in the Beeching cuts in the 1960's. Pedestrians did have access until approximately 20 years ago when access was closed off. The Carlisle Waverley Trust has been formed with a mission to reopen it and to that end planning permission is being sought to carry out the necessary works.
We need as much written support as we can get for the re-opening of the Waverley viaduct as a foot and eventually cycle route between Etterby and Newtown. You can post your individual support online using the link below and this needs to be done within the next couple of weeks. Please clearly state your reasons for support, e.g access between north and south banks of the river, commuting by foot or cycle between Etterby and the Infirmary or Newtown, jogging, dog walking, access between nature reserves on the north side with Engine Lonning reserve etc..
If we are to succeed it is essential that we prove to the council that the vast majority of citizens would like to see this second traffic free crossing of the Eden re-opened to the public.
